The Future of Food and Clean Meat

In The Future of Clean Meat we look at some of the latest developments surrounding lab-grown meat, and examine its future viability to reduce or replace conventional agriculturally raised meat.

Our dependence on meat is not sustainable and ultimately bad for us, and the environment. It’s also definitely bad for the animals.

So, how likely is a future where our meat is lab-grown, so-called ‘clean meat’ that takes a fraction of the resources to create, and without the need to slaughter an animal?

Would it be healthier for us? And could we generate enough of it to feed the ever-expanding middle classes of developing nations? And thus, ultimately begging the question, would people even buy it?

Is The Future Of Meat Animal-Free? Biotechnological Innovations To Bring Clean Meat To Consumers’ Plates

This recent article published in Science Trends states:

The production of clean meat entails growing the animal cells that comprise meat — namely, muscle and fat cells and their associated connective tissue — through large-scale bioprocesses rather than breeding, rearing, and slaughtering whole animals.

The term has been coined ‘clean meat’ in a nod to its lighter and greener footprint in terms of the energy, land, water, and fuel it needs compared with traditional meat.

Currently, there is a call-to-action for scientists and industry leaders to work together on clean meat production in a similar fashion to stem-cell research technology.

The challenge will be to mass produce realistic cuts of meat at a certain viable pricepoint that replicates the real thing, while being healthier for human consumption, and less impactful on the environment.

This article highlights how much better clean meat would be potentially for the planet with a reduction in greenhouse gases of 96%, land required by 99%, water usage by 96%, and energy required by 46%, compared with conventional meat.

A huge step towards creating a clean meat industry has been made by an exciting partnership between Mosa Foods (who generated the first lab cultured meat patty in 2013), M Ventures (the venture capital arm of Merck), and Bell Food Group, a leading Swiss meat processor.

‘Replacing traditional meat production with cultured meat would have a huge impact on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, it would free up a large amount of resources that are now used for meat production worldwide and will completely disrupt an old-established and currently unsustainable industry,’ -Alexander Hoffmann, Principal at M Ventures.

A Pet Food Startup Backed by Peter Thiel is Pursuing Lab-Grown Mouse Meat — But Some People are Worried

Finally, we look at a pet food.

Obviously, humans are not the only ones that mass consume meat.

What about pets?

If only pet owners knew how grisly and disturbing the food is they give to their beloved animals, this might be welcome news.

Tech Mogul, New Zealand-lover, and Hulk Hogan fan, Peter Thiel recently funded an animal-free pet food startup called Wild Earth with $450,000.

Wild Earth currently make products with fungus (koji), but have plans to make pet food from cultured mouse meat.

That idea worries the founders of other clean meat startups, who say marketing cultured meat as dog food could destroy its appeal for human consumers.
